A lighter letterbox.

Reduce addressed marketing, unaddressed leaflets and the data that puts your home on mailing lists.

  1. Register with MPS

The free Mailing Preference Service reduces unsolicited addressed marketing. It can take up to three months to have its full effect. It does not cover overseas mail, unaddressed leaflets or mail addressed to The Occupier.

  2. Contact organisations you already know

Ask companies or charities sending you mail to stop postal marketing. MPS is not a replacement for updating preferences with businesses you have an existing relationship with.

  3. Review Royal Mail Door to Door

Royal Mail’s opt-out covers the unaddressed items it delivers. Print the form from its help page, complete and sign it, and post it to the address shown on the form; it cannot be set up by phone. Royal Mail says it will action the request within six weeks and that the opt-out lasts two years, after which you need to send a new form. It applies to everyone at your address, is separate from MPS and does not stop other leaflet distributors.

  4. Opt out of the open electoral register

The open register is the version available for purchase. Use the GOV.UK route or contact your electoral registration office. Opting out does not affect your right to vote or remove you from the full electoral register.

  5. Check people-search listings

If your details appear on 192.com, use its removal form. Complete the email verification and submit separate requests for relevant previous addresses.
